Montalto Ligure

The first official remark of the village dates back to the eleventh century when it was taken over by the Emperor to the Bishop Diodato of Albenga. From the twelfth century the territories of Montalto, Badalucco and Carpasio broke away from the Bishops control to converge in the possessions of the Counts of Ventimiglia.

In 1259 it was sold by the Counts of Ventimiglia to the Republic of Genoa who underwent the new territory under the jurisdiction of the podestà of Triora. The annexation to the Republic of Genoa caused the village, until the eighteenth century, to share the glories and the fortunes of Genoa.

It was invaded by French troops in 1794 and, like other villages of Liguria, incorporated in the new Ligurian Republic annexed to the First French Empire of Napoleon Bonaparte.

From 1815 it was part of the Kingdom of Sardinia and later the Kingdom of Italy. During World War II it suffered significant battles between the Nazis and partisans.
