Beaches |
|
There is a wide
choice of beaches along the Ventimiglia/Camporosso/
Bordighera coastline.
In fact the whole area of the ‘lungomare,’ ‘along the sea,’ has
been re-developed to allow pedestrians to walk along the whole
length with wide pavements and many benches and bars (cafes) to
take a coffee or ice cream. Or, if you want, to go down on the
beach to sunbathe and swim.
There are also
a few beaches of interest if you want to go to a specific place.

Dog Beach in Bordighera
If you want to take your dog with
you to the beach there is a Dog Beach in Bordighera.

Camporosso
The closest is to the left of the roundabout for the turning to
the Nervia Valley (when coming down from Apricale). Go across
the bridge and just before the petrol station, there is a tunnel
where you can walk or drive through to access a narrow road that
runs along the Nervia Estuary to the beach, which has 2 relaxing
cafes. It is popular with young people and families, as there is
a volleyball court and a lifeguard in summer.

Calandre
Another popular beach with young people is Calandre, at the
other end of Ventimiglia, around the cliffs from the new port,
below the old town-accessible only by footpath from either of
these places. It is the only sandy beach in the area and the sea
stays shallow for 100m or so, popular with surfers in winter.

Cap D'Ail
If you want a slightly longer day trip, but also worth it even
by train from Ventimiglia, are the beaches at Cap D’Ail, the
stop after Monaco. From the station you go under a tunnel to
reach a footpath above the rocks and if you go right in about
15 mins you reach Plage Mala, in a spectacular location under
high cliffs, with very clean water for swimming and a small area
of public beach next to the (rather expensive) beach bars.

Balzi Rossi caves
Another great place to spend a day or a few hours
is the Balzi Rossi caves, cliffs and beach. This is an
archeological area where paeleolithic humans lived in caves.
There is a small but interesting museum and access to the cave
area for a small charge. There are good places to sunbathe and
swim on spectacular rocks next to the sea and a small beach
with restaurant and sunloungers for hire. If you walk a little
further on a cliff path you reach Benjamin Bay, with beach huts
and plenty of space. Parking for the beaches is right before the
border where there is a parking area, with a sharp left turn.
