In a Beautiful Chestnut Wood

On the outskirts of Montalto, amongst a beautifully preserved Century-old chestnut wood stands the Sanctuary of The Holy Waters (Acquasanta).

According to history it dates back from 1453 following the apparition of the Virgin to an elderly invalid, who was heeled by the miraculous rushing waters at Our Lady’s feet. What followed were numerous raids by the Saracens.

The last restoration began after the disastrous earthquake of 1887 and it was finished in the first 10 years of the 20th Century.

Inside the sanctuary, dating from 1608, the broken iron gates that separated the Baptized from the unbaptized quarters are still visible, and also the local-stone well that dates from 1486 from which water can still be drawn at any time of the year.

The marble statue of Our Lady (The Madonna) dates from 1602. It was made in Genova, brought by sea to San Remo making it’s final journey to Montalto on the back of a mule.
